In the season’s harshest months, it’s easy to succumb to the weather, and that means dry, static-addled hair, rough hands and a face so tight that it feels like those smile lines from your holiday photos are permanently etched into your cheeks. So this year, when you’re winterizing your house, car and wardrobe, be sure to adjust your beauty routine as well. We decided to seek professional help. Luckily, a variety of spas in the area offer luxurious ways to combat the winter weather.
TRESS DISTRESS
The crisis: Much like skin, hair also needs hydration, especially when the weather turns harsh. Dry indoor heating paired with low humidity outdoors can make hair frizzy and prone to static. The treatment: A mask may be just the thing to tame your addled locks, say the pros at the Chuck Thayer Salon & Spa at the Radnor Hotel. Among decadent options for the body and skin, the salon carries a variety of hair hydration options, including the Kérastase hair care line. The salon recommends Kérastase’s volumizing mask for dry and sensitive hair to combat mid-winter dryness. The process: First, the stylist assesses your hair’s needs — different formulas add varying levels of conditioning and contain a variety of vitamins. Next, the mask is worked through the hair, then rinsed out, the hair dried and styled as usual. The results: Dull, thirsty hair is revitalized, left feeling light and smooth.

THE DRY WHINE
The crisis: Dry skin is a common problem and one that gets worse as winter sets in. You know the feeling: a head-to-toe itch. The treatment: This problem demands a solution that will both exfoliate and add moisture — like the luxe body polish offered at AME Salon and Spa in Wayne. AME combines up-to-the-minute treatments with a traditional, Japanese-style hot spring spa to create a salve for body and mind alike. The body polish treatment takes place in AME’s Rain Room — the word “ame” means “rain” in Japanese after all — and promises to pamper your skin from head to toe. The process: The treatment starts with an alpha-hydroxy gel that is rubbed onto the body and used to exfoliate and revitalize dry, damaged skin. The gel loosens the outer layer of the skin and leaves your entire body vibrant and reconditioned. Then, in the Rain Room, a seven-headed “rainfall” of water cascades over the body, gently washing away the dry, winter-worn layer to reveal the soft, supple skin underneath. The result: Within a half-hour, the body polish transforms your skin from winter-rough to reinvigorated and baby-soft, with a visible glow.

MANICURE MALAISE
The crisis: When arid winter weather comes, it’s your hapless, exposed hands that feel it first — and it takes more than a simple manicure to alleviate the problem. Since moisture is the key to strong, healthy fingernails and smooth hands, go with a paraffin soak for a mega-moisture hit. The treatment: Changes Salon & Day Spa, an Aveda spa, focuses on full-body wellness and incorporates medicine into all of their beauty treatments. The salon’s intensive hydrating hand and nail treatment begins with nourishing aromatic oils massaged into your hands and cuticles. A full manicure completes the service. The process: The oils moisturize and are deeply absorbed thanks to a paraffin wax dip, which opens the pores. The results: The paraffin helps improve the condition of damaged nails, softens and smoothes skin, and hydrates parched hands. As an added bonus, it’s also said to help with arthritis and joint stiffness.

THE BACK LOG
The crisis: You are somewhere beyond tense, your back is so tight that you are starting to get headaches and your mind is unable to focus on anything. Winter is a beautiful time of year, but post-holiday stress can make it a lot less so. The treatment: Nothing says relaxing in your own winter wonderland quite like a hot stone therapy treatment. Calista Grand, the area’s first day spa, offers a unique connection with nature with this treatment. In it, water-heated stones — selected for their size, shape and weight — are applied to key points of the body to aid deep relaxation. The process: The treatment incorporates the traditional strokes of Swedish massage, except that the masseuse holds a heated stone in her hand. The direct heat helps the muscles release tension, allowing for a more intense massage. The heat penetrates deep into the muscles, offering an all-encompassing feeling of comfort and warmth. Cold stones are added to stimulate the body, and the combination makes for a new sense of physical vibrancy. The results: Back pains and muscle aches are gone, replaced by a relaxed feeling and a deep, internal warmth.

FACING THE PROBLEM
The crisis: Like the hands, the face is frequently exposed the elements, so delicate facial skin demands extra care to stand up to the weather. The treatment: For many people a monthly facial is key to skin care, since skin rejuvenates itself on a 28-day cycle. The Antoinette Day Spa & Salon — a member of the Premier Collection, an elite group of spas located throughout North America — offers a selection of lush facials, tailored to your personal skincare needs. The Signature Facial purifies and rejuvenates the skin with deep pore cleansing, toning, steaming, exfoliating, massaging and moisturizing treatments. The process: Cleansers add balance to vulnerable, distressed areas of the face and help nourish the skin, allowing it to recover from environmental damage. Opt for the Sensational Eyes treatment, which helps reduce redness, puffiness, congestion and the look of dark circles around the delicate eye area. The result: Smooth, clear, well-hydrated skin with an emphasis on maintaining that healthy glow throughout the month.

WALK THE LINE
The crisis: Dry, rough skin and fine lines are settling in for the winter. Your complexion is getting dull, and you’re really just starting to look a little blah. The treatment: The three keys to skin care at OMG Salon are correction, restoration and protection, and nothing exemplifies those more than their legendary microdermabrasion treatment. Done in conjunction with a facial, microdermabrasion is a form of exfoliation that helps repair the skin from harsh weather and the effects of aging. Gentle abrasion removes the dead, outer layer of the skin, resurfacing it and leaving a rejuvenated glow in its place. The process: An aesthetician begins by assessing your skin, determining what level of cleansing and what vitamins you need for maximum restoration. An alpha hydroxy gel is used to improve circulation and get deep into the epidermis. Extractions and masks are incorporated into the procedure and re-hydrating toner, moisturizer and sunscreen are applied to your skin at the end of the treatment. The results: A cross between a traditional European facial and a clinical one, the production of new cells in the skin’s deepest layer have been established. As with may other rejuvenation treatments, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles. But unlike many other procedures, this one leaves an immediate glow.
OMG, 351 Righters Mill Rd., Gladwyne; 610-896-3552; omgstyle.com; microdermabrasion starts at $125.
